The Speake Marin Openworked Dual Time Terracotta

Vibrant summery colours for Speake Marin's contemporary dual time model.

| By Rebecca Doulton | 2 min read |

Speake Marin’s One & Two Dual Time Openworked model was released in 2019, a sophisticated GMT with retrograde date combined with the brand’s eccentric layouts and distinctive Piccadilly case. For summer 2024, Speake Marin turns up the volume with the vibrant terracotta-orange tones of the Openworked Dual Time Terracotta.

Following the first Openworked Dual Time with its more muted palette and rose gold case, Speake Marin enlivened the watch with more contemporary colours and materials. In 2021, it appeared in a black DLC case with mint-coloured accents and a year later in an acid lime green suit.

One of the cornerstones of Speake Marin’s identity is the drum-shaped Piccadilly case with its oversized fluted crown and straight lugs. Available in 38mm and 42mm diameters sharing a height of 12.35mm, the titanium case of the new Openworked Dual Time is decorated with polished surfaces and a brushed case middle.

As far as openworked or skeletonised dials go, the Dual Time is a conservative take on the technique. Combined with the bright terracotta mainplate, the multilevel indications stand out very clearly. Starting clockwise, the small seconds counter at 1:30 has an orange frosted finish, grey markings, and blue-emission Super-LumiNova applied to the 5-second intervals. A horseshoe-shaped track surrounding the small seconds corresponds to the retrograde date indication.

Flanking the date are the rhodium-plated bridges for the barrel and rotor, with their micro-blasted finishes and mirror-polished bevels. The two-tone GMT indicator with a 24-hour scale is suspended over the aperture for the micro-rotor. Nighttime readings are relayed in the black areas with grey numerals, while the silvery-coloured area with orange numerals is for daylight.

Another fun aspect of the watch is the application of Super-LumiNova in different colours. The second time zone glows with orange-emission Super-LumiNova applied to the arrow-shaped pointer and the Arabic numerals from 18 to 6. For contrast, the signature Big Ben-style hands indicating local time are treated with blue-emission SLN matching that is used on the 5-minute markers of the black PVD minutes flange.

The movement of the Dual Time model evolved from the brand’s proprietary SMA01 micro-rotor base calibre. Designed and manufactured in-house by Le Cercle des Horlogers in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the SMA02 runs at 4Hz and stores up to 52 hours of power reserve. The exhibition caseback reveals the attractive thin Geneva stripes on the bridges and the micro-rotor with its orange topping tool.

Underscoring its contemporary spirit, the Dual Time comes with a white rubber strap and a titanium pin buckle. The Openworked Dual Time Terracotta in a 38mm titanium case retails for CHF 31,900 (excl. tax) in a 42mm case for CHF 32,400 (excl. tax) and is now available to purchase.
